The Rappahannock County Property we know today looks vastly different from the Rappahannock County of 1656 – mainly because they actually are different places. The first one is now the counties of Richmond and Essex and today’s Rappahannock County used to be part of Culpeper County until its separation in 1833. In the 1680s, when the first one was still in existence, today’s area was only just being explored and it wasn’t until 1722 that colonization became possible.

Some of the Rappahannock County Real Estate from these early days has actually survived to this day. Washington, the county seat and the only official town in Rappahannock, was surveyed in 1749 by 17-year-old George Washington himself and the town boasts of being the oldest of all the 28 communities with the name Washington in the country. Quite a few of the structures extant when the young George Washington conducted his survey still stand today, and the entire town of Washington is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

There’s actually a fair number of historic Rappahannock County property still in existence these days, a state of affairs brought about by the fact that folks in the county chose to remain a primarily agricultural community. Apart from Washington, historic Rappahannock County property can also be found in the villages of Sperryville and Flint Hill, and scattered throughout the area.
