If there’s one thing the town of Middleburg is known for it’s its equestrian tradition. The folks who come to the area do so for various reasons, most of which have something or other to do with horses. Middleburg horse farms exert an appeal over your average horse-lover that’s hard to resist – all those rolling green hills framed by the impressive backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains are compelling.

The town itself has a total area of just a little over half a square mile, but it’s surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful Piedmont countryside dotted with Middleburg horse farms and Middleburg country estates.

Fox hunting, steeplechase racing, three-day eventing – these are only some of the equestrian-oriented activities that are held in and around Middleburg. Both held at Glenwood Park, the Middleburg Spring Races and the Virginia Fall Races are highlights of the Hunt Country’s spring and fall racing seasons. The Spring Races got its start in 1911 and has gone on to become a regional icon. The Fall Races, also known as the Fall Race weekend, is an event that many horse lovers look forward to every year.

Another notable equestrian event is the Middleburg Classic Horse Show which, this 2008, will be held at a new location, “Oakley Farm,” in Upperville, Virginia.
